Criteria to discriminate between different models of thrust ramping in gravity-driven fold and thrust systems

چکیده

Although most models of thrusting assume that the hangingwall is actively displaced up thrust ramp while footwall remains passive, it has been suggested this could be an oversimplification and may also deform. Despite this, there are relatively few detailed investigations thrusts where deformed, perhaps reflecting issues with space accommodation if moves downwards to deeper levels. Furthermore, such studies deeply buried, otherwise more likely rise simply uplift surface. Using examples from gravity-driven fold systems developed in unlithified late Pleistocene sediments around Dead Sea Basin, we investigate pristine geometries unaffected by later compaction deformation establish two end-member overthrust underthrust development. During overthrusting, uplifted marker beds remain at or above regional elevation, whereas ramps depressed deflected below regional. The greatest displacement generally develops low down decreases upwards, larger displacements form high reduce downwards. reduction marked decreasing dips, increases dips ramps. Fault propagation folding creates antiforms ramps, synforms develop effect sequences cut-offs thinned (stretch <1) (stretch>1). Not all follow these mixed ‘wedge’ which both deformed varying degrees. Underthrust failure initiates competent units higher deforming sequence, then propagates towards underlying potential detachments. Downward accommodated weak absorb differential vertical resulting 50% thinning some cases. A consequence underthrusting crests structures tend same elevation therefore unable build significant topography bathymetry on sediment-water interface, thereby rendering critical taper less relevance. Significant facilitate expulsion fluids drive further complicate use area balancing techniques during restoration systems. • Gravity-driven (FATS) mass transport deposits (MTDs) examined. Criteria distinguish overthrusting established. We describe underthrusts for first time FATS within MTDs. Underthrusting compaction. Underthrusts lack render relevant

Collapse structures in Dowgonbadan region, Zagros fold- thrust belt

Allochthonous masses are common structures in Zagros fold-thrust belt. They are generally considered as collapse structures formed by the influence of gravity and in rock units with competency contrast. However, large allochthonous masses mapped in Dowgonbadan area in Dezful Embayment near the Mountain Front Fault (MFF) of Zagros show characteristics different from the belt common collapse stru...

Growth and erosion of fold-and-thrust belts with an application to the Aconcagua fold-and-thrust belt, Argentina

[1] The development of topography within and erosional removal of material from an orogen exerts a primary control on its structure. We develop a model that describes the temporal development of a frontally accreting, critically growing Coulomb wedge whose topography is largely limited by bedrock fluvial incision. We present general results for arbitrary initial critical wedge geometries and in...

Relative timing of calcite twinning strain and fold-thrust belt development; Hudson Valley fold-thrust belt, New York, U.S.A

Coarse-grained limestone samples were collected across the Hudson Valley Fold-Thrust Belt with the aim of determining the temporal and spatial relationship between calcite twinning strain and fold-thrust belt development. The majority of the samples have well defined oblate strain ellipsoids with the maximum shortening axes (e3) perpendicular to bedding strike, and e3 magnitudes that range from...

Kinematics of the Dena Fault and Its Relation to Deep-Seated Transverse Faults in Zagros Fold-Thrust Belt, Iran

The NNW-trending Dena Fault, with 140 km length, cuts the major structures of Zagros Fold-Thrust Belt in Borujen region. The fault has divided the region in two zones, in which different structural, andmorphological features as well assedimentation and seismtectonic characteristics have developed. This study presents a new interpretation for the kinematics of Dena Fault based on field evidence....

Design of Low-thrust Multi-gravity Assist Trajectories to Europa

This paper presents the design of a mission to Europa using solar electric propulsion as main source of thrust. A direct transcription method based on Finite Elements in Time was used for the design and optimisation of the entire low-thrust gravity assist transfer from the Earth to Europa. Prior to that, a global search algorithm was used to generate a set of suitable first guess solutions for ...
